A single $4.9 billion donation skewed the entire Australian charity landscape in 2023. But once you look past that headline number, the ACNC’s latest report reveals a harsh and urgent reality for the sector.
The 11th Edition of the ACNC Australian Charities Report paints a picture of extreme polarisation. While one mega-donation captured headlines, the underlying data tells a different story:
Stagnant Growth: Without that single gift, total donations grew by a mere 0.4% from the previous year.
Extreme Concentration: A tiny cohort of just 30 charities (a minuscule 0.05% of the sector) received approximately 40% of ALL donations and bequests.
The Silent Crisis: Most alarmingly, about 34% of all registered charities reported receiving ZERO donations. For extra-small charities, the situation is even more dire, with nearly half (44%) receiving no donations at all.
